AAV TENNIS ROUND-UP It was a down the wire cardiac contest for the last finals slot in the Chairman’s Cup elimination round held last September 25-26 in San Juanico Courts as the Yellow team overtook Red by a hairline, 72-71 with a big help from the spoiler Blue team. The never-say-die and prayerful Yellow team coached by Jess Yuzon won the deciding Class B doubles match with the Green team to seal the fate of the Red team. Yellow players Marphil Suria and a steady Korean Huang won over Green’s Celso Sulit and Noriko, 8-5. Yellow also prayed hard for the Red team to lose its final three games with Blue and they were not to be denied. The Red team blew three chances to win the last finals berth by losing its last three games. Second seed Paco Sandejas upset Red’s top seed Philippe Seyer in closely fought single match, 8-6, while Blue doubles players John Suares and dimunitive T. Fukushima outplayed Red tandem of Manny Lopez and Isa Figgins, 8-7 in a breaker. Earlier, Red team’s Randy Gonzales and Isa Figgins ealier lost to Ronnie Arbis and Kaori in Class C match, 4-8. The final matches between the Green and Yellow will be held October 2-3, Saturday and Sunday. “Same format but more improved,” said AAV Tennis Club President Ronnie Arbis as he announced the forthcoming AAVA President’s Cup which will be held tentatively on November 6. At this early, everyone is anticipating another slam bang tournament due to the success of the 2004 Chairman’s Cup. Everyone agrees that it is the best tournament staged so far in terms of enthusiasm, excitement, thrill, teamwork and camaraderie it generated among the tennis enthusiasts in the village. Kudos to the Club officers, the organizers, the team captains, the players, the AAVA and most especially our Barangay Chairman Roland Pineda for the successful staging of the 2004 Chairman’s Cup.
Cely Macalino, a grandmother many times over, became the poster girl of tennis fitness as she engaged three young kids, old enough to be her grandchildren in an interesting doubles match. Father time however caught up with “Monica Cely” as she together with 8 year old Lance Bosch lost to 11 year old Lana Bosch and 17 year old Mark Barreto, 1-8. Cely and her partner Laura, however, won their match against Deo Timbol and Lana Bosch 8-6, a few hours later. |

| AAV TENNIS ROUND-UP by Dindo G. Soriano Green Team Ups Lead, Red, Yellow in virtual tie for 2nd Adrenalin rush and the will to win propelled the Green team to douse gritty Red team’s spirited rally as it won its last five games to neutralize the Red’s three consecutive wins in the second round of the Chairman’s Cup . The Green team padded its lead over Red team by 5 points in the team standing. Meanwhile, excitement builds up as Red and Yellow, are in a neck-to-neck race for second place. The first two placers at the end of the elimination round next weekend will slug it out in the finals. But no team is giving up as it’s still a long way to go. It’s not over until it’s over. Not until the fat lady sings (ooops, not referring to anyone). |
